दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे |
देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम् ||
"Charity given out of duty, without expectation of return, at the right time and place,
and to those who are worthy, is considered to be Satvika (pure)."
This verse encapsulates the essence of selfless giving, which is central to the practice of dana in Sanatana Dharma. It emphasizes that the act of giving should be done with purity of heart, without any desire for reciprocation, and with discernment regarding the recipient’s worthiness, as well as the appropriateness of time and place.
In our way of life, donation, or Dana, is considered a vital aspect of one’s Dharma (duty or righteousness). It is a fact that sharing wealth and resources with those in need is a moral obligation and a way to achieve spiritual growth and purification. The concept of Dana extends beyond mere charity; it expresses compassion and empathy towards others. Furthermore, our Dharma encourages the sharing of knowledge, protection, and offering food, considering these as the highest forms of Dana because they empower individuals and communities. In essence, donation in our Dharma is about cultivating generosity, fostering community welfare, and progressing toward spiritual upliftment.
न किञ्चिदानीयं न किञ्चिद्नेतुमुत्सहे |
न किञ्चिदासीत्पूर्वं न किञ्चिद्बहिष्कृतम् ||
“We have not brought anything when we came, nor can we take anything when we depart. There was nothing before, and nothing will be taken out.”
